It’s that time of year! Cozy up with a cup of tea or cocoa, wear your knitted jumpers and socks, bring out your winter pyjamas, and mind your immune system!

Hey guys! I have actually been getting a lot of questions about what the best herb blends are for when you are feeling under the weather, as well as the best combos for this time of year, especially with the shorter days and lack of daylight.

Here are this week’s top recommendations for you:)

Herbal Goodness

Herbal infusions are the best way to treat anything in my world. Here are the ones I recommend for the sake of this post:

– Green tea

– Elderflower: brilliant for the immune system and overall health

– Echinacea: strong against cold and flu

– Oolong

– Vervain: great for pain relief

– Valerian root: this will help you sleep when a full

– Chamomile

Oil Infusions are also a great way to treat and heal. Here is my favourite winter blend

3 drops of Eucalyptus + 2 drops of Peppermint + 4 drops of Lavender

Home-made Chai Tea or Chai Tea Latte

Black tea + hot water + cardamom + cloves + pink pepper + ginger + cinnamon

This is how I normally do it:

First, I put the kettle on, then start working on the ingredients. I put the black tea in my tea filter and lightly mix it or squeeze it. I find it “awakens” the herb. It may just be in my head but I feel it wakes them up from having been sitting there and the cracks help maximise access to the inner parts of the leaf. Again, it may make no difference but I do the same with fruits before infusing them in water. I open them up a bit and get their juices going lol.

Next, I combine the cardamom, cloves, and pink pepper and use a mortar and pestle to lightly grind the ingredients. In this case it really does make a difference and you can smell it!

Once this is done, I make some ginger shavings (I usually add ginger if I am feeling a bit more tired or slightly under the weather). I prefer to use raw ginger roots. I add this to my tea filter along with the dried ingredients.

I then add the hot water, I leave the tea bag in as long as I want to on that given day. I add cinnamon at the very end once I have removed the tea bag. The cinnamon mostly floats at the top and I don’t put too much, I just find it lifts my spirits and give that added buzz to my Chai.

On occasion, I also add steamed milk or frothy milk that I make using my little hand sized milk frother. Voila! Chai Latte 🙂

You can make yours exactly the way you want to and experiment with the ingredients. I find that mine will taste slightly different every day. It’s one of my favourites all year round but particularly during Autumn and Winter. It’s bright, uplifting, and assists with congestion and fatigue.

 

S.O.S Blend

Hot water, sliced lemon, raw ginger, and ORGANIC honey. You want all the enzymes and benefits that filtered and overly treated honey loses.

Choosing your Honey:

If you have the choice of choosing the honey flower, these would be best for this:

Acacia for its anti-inflammatory properties which are good for the respiratory system. This honey is also mild, sweet, and remains liquid for longer.

Beechwood is also very good for the immune system.

Chestnut flower honey because of its low Glycemic index (which is why I recommend it a lot, especially to diabetics).

 

Go Green 

This one is more of an improvisation game but these are some of the best ingredients that I recommend:

– Wheatgrass

-Spinach

-Kale

-Cucumber

-Avocado

-Aloe (natural juice)

and any other green vegetable you enjoy. Then,

-Kiwi

-Orange (most citrus)

-Berries

-Seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, flax, chia)

Then blend this with water or milk. I always use Almond and Oat milk. When I need an added boost I use water instead and add a Turmeric shot and Ginseng.

 

IMPORTANT!

Aside from all this, do not forget to regularly fuel yourself with whole foods, veggies, fruits, sufficient protein, healthy fats, seeds, and any vitamins you may need. For example, I am anaemic so I take two shots of iron juice per day and it also contains B complex. Omega 3,6, and 9 are also great. Adding vitamin D during the darker days of the winter has been beneficial to many to whom I have recommended it. Lastly, vitamin C is always a good one especially when you are more susceptible to being ill or when you are.
